Short-answer questions are the most common ways to assess someone’s knowledge. There are two ways you can create them depending if you want the time limit of your assessment to be defined by the assessment itself or the individual questions.

Pro-tip! Choose to set the time limit by question if you want candidates to attach supporting documents to their answers.
Create a general assessment template or select an existing one.
Add your assessment title.
Click the ‘Randomize questions’ toggle button if you want candidates to get randomized questions in their assessment. The degree of randomization differs depending on the number you input in the ‘Total random questions’ field.
- Scenario 1: Let’s say you have 5 questions for this assessment and you only want the sequence of questions to be randomized. Input ‘5’ in the ‘Total random questions’ field and create only 5 questions later on.
- Scenario 2: Let’s say you have 20 questions for this assessment but you only want 5 randomly selected questions to appear on the assessment for any given candidate. Input ‘5’ in the ‘Total random questions’ field but create 20 questions later on.
If this doesn’t apply to you, feel free to skip this. You’ll then be given the options to set a time limit by assessment or by question. Either way, you’ll have to specify the review time and time limit.
- Review time is the amount of time a candidate has to review a question(s)
- Time limit is the amount of time a candidate has to finish a question(s)
Option 1:
Set your time limit by assessment should you prefer to define an accumulated period for all questions’ review and completion, and click ‘Save template’.
When you’re taken to the template page, you will see the total number of random questions (if any), review time, and time limit. Click ‘+ Add question’.
Select ‘Write answer’ and put your question in the empty field. Click the ‘Enable text editor for answer field’ toggle button if you want to give candidates the freedom to present their answers in the way they want (e.g. bold or italicize key points).
Keep adding questions until you’re done.
If you have specified the total number of random questions earlier (let’s say you said 5), you must provide at least 5 questions to save the template.
Option 2:
Set your time limit by question should you prefer to define a specific period of review and completion for each question, and click ‘Save template’.
When you’re taken to the template page, you will see the total number of random questions (if any). Click ‘Add question’ and select ‘Write answer’.
Add your review time, time limit, and question. Decide if you want to enable the text editor for the answer field (so candidates have more freedom to stylize or format their answers) and allow candidates to upload files.
To add the same kind of questions, click ‘Add question’ and select ‘Write answer’. When you’re done, click ‘Save template’.
